A Conversation With Dr. Allen Williams - My thoughts to share today include several folks and spans several different periods of time. One of Stephen Covey's 7-Habits of Highly Effective People was "Begin With The End In Mind". So, I'm actually going to begin with the end of the conversation and then provide the background.
Friday morning, Dr. Williams called me about 6am from the Seattle, WA airport prior to boarding his flight to come home. His week started in San Francisco where he was invited to speak at a gathering of 70+ Billionaires who were interested in learning more about Regenerative Ag and how they could support Regenerative Farms. He ended the week in Seattle where he met with 75% of Costco's buying team for food-related items.
And this is not the first time Dr. Williams has spoken to influential people and companies who have sought him out regarding his knowledge and experience with Regenerative Agriculture. I would say there are not many folks with their finger on the pulse of agriculture's future better than Allen - ESPECIALLY IN MISSISSIPPI!
Saturday, one of our good customers sent me an email that said: "I couldn't help but think of you and your weekly newsletters as I read last week's Market Bulletin. The one article said pretty much everything you have been saying. Being in the Bulletin more people will see these thoughts and perhaps give it serious consideration.
With chicken selling out so quickly, I'll have to keep a closer eye on restocking day to get larger chickens.
Always enjoy the products I purchase.
God bless you and Beth for all your hard work.
Sincerely, Mary."
The article Mary mentioned was written by Dr. Williams and is titled Agriculture, Consolidation and the Future of Our Rural Economy. I actually missed it when reading through my copy of the MS Market Bulletin.... because it was on Page 26.
Why is this important? Because his article was supposed to be on the front cover of the Market Bulletin as promised by our Commissioner of Ag Andy Gipson. Not buried among numerous other articles, but front and center so more folks were likely to see and read what Allen had to say.
One of my farmer friends, MaryJo Perry, is good friends with the Gipson's, especially Andy's wife. MaryJo was able to facilitate a meeting between Andy and Allen. At that meeting Andy agreed to publish an article by Allen on the front cover of the MS Market Bulletin and to host a meeting at the Ag Museum where interested farmers could come and listen as well as ask questions about Regenerative Agriculture. Allen has asked me to provide my testimony at this meeting. A date has yet to be confirmed.
Frankly, I will be surprised if the meeting ever happens. Which is tragic! Mississippi has tremendous potential to be a shining star for raising healthy food. Yet, we are stuck with a farm council chartered to write a plan for the future of MS agriculture and there is not even one full-time farmer on the council. I expect the results will be the same ole, same ole. Which is why MS is a FOOD DESERT - 98% of the food consumed by MS citizens was raised or grown outside of Mississippi at a loss of $8.5 Billion dollars annually according a 2016 report.
With the growing awareness of processed foods linked to many of our chronic illnesses, the new Federal Dietary Guidelines emphasing eating whole foods, and increasing bankruptcy rate among farmers, you would think it would be easy to connect the dots and know we must do things differently.
Proverbs 29:18 says, "Where there is no vision, the people perish:" AI (yeah, I know, but this was pretty good) interprets this verse to mean that without divine guidance, prophetic revelation, or a clear purposeful goal, people lose restraint, become stagnant, and decline. It emphasizes that a lack of forward-looking direction leads to chaos and loss of purpose.
And yet, we have a great resource like Dr. Williams with extensive knowledge and experience as well as contacts (influential folks looking for whole foods) and a few successful Regenerative direct market farms that are overlooked in favor of the same organizations, associations, academics, etc. that put us in this hole in the first place.
Now you know about my conversation with Dr. Williams Friday morning.
Next week I hope to share insight into the recently released Farm Bill and especially the impact on folks harmed by chemical agriculture. Stay tuned.
