America's Health Rankings - 2025 Annual Report is the longest running state-by-state analysis of our nation's health. The report analyzes 99 measures of health and well-being drawn from 31 data sources and offers a long-term look at health trends both nationally and at the state level. The report is based on 36 years of assessment. The healthiest state was New Hampshire, followed by Massachusetts (2), Vermont (3), Connecticut (4) and Utah (5).
Louisiana (50) was the least healthy, followed by Arkansas (49), Mississippi (48), Alabama (47) and West Virginia (46).
Obesity in Mississippi is 40.4% based on adults who have a body mass index of 30.0 or higher based on reported height and weight.
Did you know that the Health Industry is the most regulated industry in Mississippi with more than 5,000 regulations prohibiting people from consuming healthy real whole food like raw cow's milk!!! Politicians like the Chairman of the Senate Health Committee is an enabler of this. Frankly, I don't drink store milk because pasteurization destroys nutritional value - and commercial dairies have to pasturize because of how cows are raised and milked. Meaning, if cows were raised on pasture where God intended them to be vs. locked up in barns, pasteurization would not be necessary!!!
Kyle Diamantas is the Food and Drug Administration's deputy commissioner for human foods. He rightfully states the newly released dietary guidelines and updated food pyramid are "long overdue," arguing they are aimed at reversing America's disease crisis. "When the first dietary guidelines came out in 1980, obesity was around 14%. Today, it's about 40% nationally." I know that when I look back at my high school annual there were only 1 or 2 people in my graduating class that would have been considered obese (out of 175 classmates).
Observation alone is enough to know something is drastically wrong! You don't need research studies, etc. - and this report has been tracking the trends almost as long as the first food pyramid came out.
He states, "America is first in healthcare spending and 46th in life expectancy," "We have 15,000 new cases of diabetes each year."
Since 1980 the food pyramid basically emphasized high carbs from processed and ultra-processed foods that make up over 70% of the calories on the plates of youth in this country. 40% of teenagers are prediabetic. Kyle states "Our chronic disease rates, diabetes, obesity have skyrocketed since that point."
The new food pyramid is aimed at reversing America's chronic disease crisis by prioritizing protein, fruits and vegetables, healthy fats, and dairy, while sharply reducing refined carbohydrates, added sugars, and highly processed foods.
A strong argument could be made that the prior food pyramid has cost Americans more financially especially when factoring in healthcare costs, than the new food recommendations - then there is the 46th ranking in life expectancy. Seems like a very poor value for your dollar.
Thursday Beth and I traveled to South FL to attend the annual Pastured Poultry Conference. There are at least four speakers/subjects listed that are of interest to help us "up our game" in raising pastured chickens. When we last added chicken to our store it sold out in under two hours. So, we need to raise more chicken to keep up with the demand and provide for our customers. We return Sunday afternoon to crate chicken and turkeys for harvest Monday morning.
Farm work never ends as long as folks choose to eat 3 meals a day. 😉
