Farm Updates - Year-to-date we have had 46.72 inches of rain on our farm. That is 75% of our average annual. About 32 inches has fallen since the last week in April - with just shay of 10 inches this week. To say we are water logged is an understatement! Our farm has weathered the storms pretty good until this week. Unfortunately, with Tuesday's unexpected heavy rain we lost broiler chickens. We have three batches on pasture at this time. The batch we process next Tuesday faired pretty good with only 10 lost. The middle age batch had about 40 lost and the youngest batch lost was about 110 or over a third of the batch.
The cows, pigs, and hens have been okay. Unfortunately with the water logged pastures it does not take long for the cows & pigs to make a mess so we are moving them very fast. Thankfully, we have not received the 25 mph wind that was forecasted first of the week or there would have been a lot of trees down. In addition to the chicken losses we will have fences to repair and probably some pastures to replant.
The big row croppers in my area have it worse! They have not been able to plant most of their fields and the ones I have seen that were planted have about 40% flooded out. And, time is quickly running out for them to be able to plant the rest of their fields and still make a crop.
It has been a tough year stewarding the land and animals.
The end of May I made a request to our faithful customers to add some extra eggs, leg quarters, and sausages to their orders this month and boy did y'all respond! 😀
Leg quarters surpassed breast sales! Egg sales increased about 30%. And, we had a lot of customers buy our sausages to give them a try. We are grateful for your support. 🙏
Soil Health Principle 1 - Soil Armor. Last week I mentioned that Acres USA (the only magazine I read) had recently shared a five part series on Jay Fuhrer, NRCS from North Dakota, who was one of the first to define the five Soil Health Principles as a whole. Acres USA has given me permission to share these articles with my customer base starting this week. Knowing what Regenerative Farming is and is not is important as more customers and farmers convert to Regenerative Farming.
Unfortunately, they shared the articles as a PDF and the only way I know to include in my email writer is to scan them as a JPG file and add that way. Hope it works good for those interested.
An example from my farm. Several years ago we hosted a NCAT Farmer meeting here with Dr. Williams. One of the test he made was soil temperature. It was mid April. The outside air temp was 72 degrees. Allen took his infared temp gun and tested the loose gravel/dirt in front of my hay barn - temp was like 112 degrees. Next, he tested the soil temp in our yard where the grass was cut a few days earlier - temp was low 90's. Lastly, he went to some tall winter grass in our garden spot. Pulled back the canopy and took the temp- 68 degrees. Now, imagine what the temp would be like in the middle of June, July, or August! All areas except the garden spot would have been hot enough to kill soil biology..
