Farm Updates - The last day we received rain was June 16th. This was the day after we put to pasture the last batch of chickens we processed July 21st. I remember the day well - it rained 6 inches. We lost power shortly after starting cutting & packing beef. Thankfully, we have a generator....just that I had never had the opportunity to see if it would "actually" power the whole plant refrigeration plus our 3-phase electrical band saw and vacuum sealer. Thankfully it worked perfect.
That 6 inches was more than those 3-week old baby chickens could handle. Even with placing crates in the tractors for them to get on out of the water we still lost about half of the batch.
Since that last rain on June 16th we have not had enough to settle any dust. And, as you know it has been HOT!
Have you ever heard the saying, "A day late and a dollar short?" Well last week I was "A day late and cost me 50 chickens." Since I finally had an open day I planned to add misters to the chicken tractors last Saturday. Well, the day before we lost about 50 chickens from the heat. After installing the misters the impact was immediate. They stopped panting, relaxed, and seemed more resting. The chickens will definitely drink more water which will help them eat and grow.
The last day of July I had the care of the animals to myself. It was really nice to be out and be around the cows & calves. And about 5pm when I was finishing up the last of the chores a dark cloud appeared. Then a loud clap of thunder followed by lightening. Shortly afterwards you could see the rain coming across the pasture. I know the cows & pigs really enjoyed the 1.86 inches of cool rain that will also make a huge difference in our forage growth. Very Grateful to my Lord for answering our pray for rain.
Picture of the Week - While out taking care of the cows Friday morning I found this family swimming in the pond. They did not seem to mind me or the cows. I'm not sure what breed of "duck" this is so if you know please reply and let me know. I did see them again late Friday near the pond across the road from our home - which is at least a third of a mile from where I saw them Friday morning.
