New U.S. Dietary Guidelines – Last week our newsletter focused on understanding what are ultra-processed foods, what and how they are made, and ingredient labeling. Little did I know that HHS Secretary Robert Kennedy, Jr. would announce the release of the New U.S. Dietary Guidelines in December. Here are a few bullets from his announcement:

- We are about to release dietary guidelines that are going to change the food culture in this country.
- Kennedy said the revamp would not only transform eating habits but would bring federal food policy in line with his Make America Healthy Again initiative.
- He promised guidelines putting more emphasis on whole foods, including saturated fats from dairy and meat products.

Who Is Nina Teicholz? - I first met Nina when she was a speaker at the Grassfed Exchange Conference. She had just released her book "The Big Fat Surprise". She has her doctorate in nutrition, with a focus on evidence-based dietary guidelines and is a nutrition journalist who advocates for a diet that includes High Quality Fats to include Saturated fats from sources like butter, meat, and cheese as well as Monounsaturated fats from olive oil and avocados. Additionally, Low-Carbohydrate Foods like vegetables, fruits, and whole grains.

Nina is working with Sec. Kennedy on the new guidelines.

You can read more about Nina and her work at the Nutrition Coalition.

The Dietary Guidelines are CRUCIAL: they drive food in school lunches, military mess halls, and ‘food baskets for women and infant children, among many other federal programs. The guidelines are also considered the “gold standard” for doctors, nutritionists, and other professionals. Guidelines have been in effect for the last 45 plus years and have changed little since the beginning.

Every five years the guidelines are "updated" by a committee. Past committees have been burdened by conflicts of interest from industries like pharma and food. Nina shares that pharma is the largest funder of generally accepted food research. When you overlay the increased rates of obesity, diabetes, heart disease, and cancer for instance, with the start of the dietary guidelines, there is a very clear pattern that these guidelines (peoples' diet) are the root cause.

Thankfully, the new guidelines are being developed with folks like Nina who have no conflict of interest ties to pharma or food industry and lobbyists. This change will not come easy!!! There is hardly an industry or people that will not be affected - however, it is much needed.

Let me encourage you to watch this video by Dr. Ken Berry, MD interview with Nina Teicholz as she shares the history of the U.S. Dietary Guidelines, conflicts of interest over the years, and the work the current HHS administration is doing to introduce a low-carb option for Americans. Long time RN. I have witnessed the changes in various recommendations for diets over the past 46 years. I am eating low carb, high fat at the age of 76, and have experienced many health- and mental health advantages . My specialty is Psychiatric and Mental Health nursing, with many years of working in Addiction treatment. I stand by this PHD and promote it to my colleagues whenever I can. Thanks so much for all you do!

Carbs have been my downfall. Carnivore has been the rope that has pulled me out of the pit of malnutrition!

April in sw VA-- Jan 1, 2025 I was a size 22--started a low carb diet that day--and I'm not perfect at it but getting better. Today I am a size 14 and I did not starve or exercise myself to death. I do a 15 min workout every other day. This is the best way I can effect change in my community is from people who are amazed at my transformation. We definitely need to change the food guidelines.

Now is the moment of opportunity to make real change in our families' health. Your help is needed to counter lobbyists who have open doors to political figures in D.C. Please go to lowcarbMAHA.org - use the graphics available there or make your own - and tweet to the following people your support of a Low Carb Option for the 88% of Americans who have a chronic illness.
