SEE WHAT'S NEW THIS WEEK FROM YOUR FARMER

Beef Sale UPDATE - Beef sale has been going great! While it has been a good opportunity to stock up and enjoy heart-healthy, nutrient-dense beef during May's National Grilling Month, our sale will end with our Jackson Metro delivery route May 16th.

Unusual Farm Visitors - In the past two weeks we have had three unusual farm visitors. While each of these visitors can be found on most farms, what makes them unusual is where they showed up.

The first one is a chicken snake about 3 or so feet long came up on our back porch and made himself at home. Belle located him and barked a few times then she and the snake had a stare down. Belle soon got bored and moved on about her business - giving the snake an opportunity to do the same. 🐍

Many of our mama cows currently have young (baby) calves. When we move them to a new pasture many of these babies have not learned that when the cows start moo-ing it means they need to get up and find their mom! 😃 And, the moms seem to forget about their calf in favor of the new swath of diverse forage pasture on the other side of the gate - everyone wants to be first to find the best grazing spot.

So, after moving the mamas we will walk through the pasture and shade tree areas to check for snoozing calves.

Now, having deer on our farm is not unusual - just saying. However, having a deer on our farm with a GPS necklace that will also come up to you to be petted - well, that is a bit unusual. Especially here in Perry County, Mississippi.

Our latest visitor once again first showed up on our back porch. Beth and I were delivering our Gulf Coast Route last Saturday and Will was looking after the farm. Suddenly, Belle was barking up a storm. By the time Will arrived on the scene the turtle had made its way off the porch and into the grass. Folks, this is not an ordinary turtle! This turtle will aggressively bite you - and not let go. We call them snapping turtles for a good reason.

When I was growing up I remember someone telling the story of a large snapping turtle they had caught on a troutline in the river. They removed its head and the next morning it could still bite a green stick the diameter of a pencil in two.

Thanks to Belle for being on the lookout and alerting us when things are not as they should be.

Farm Bill Comments - have you been keeping up with the Farm Bill? Every five years (at least supposed to) Congress enacts an updated Farm Bill. Two of the issues I would like to briefly comment on are: 1) Glyphosate; 2) SNAP Funding

First, glyphosate. Thankfully the amendment to prevent companies from being sued for damages caused by their product was defeated! 🙏

SNAP Funding. SNAP is short for Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program administered by the USDA. This week, as part of the MAHA agenda, there was an amendment to bar soda and other sugar-sweetened beverages from being eligible under SNAP. It is important to note that these product sales are $9 billion of SNAP funds and represent 10% of the program's total budget and the top food item purchased.

Folks, have you read the label on a soda can lately? I must admit that I have not - so I got one and read it. According to the Coke Nutrition Facts a serving is 1 can that has 140 calories. Percent daily values are Sodium 2%, Total Carbs 14% Added Sugars 78%. Fat & Protein 0%. This does not come close to meeting the definition of Nutrition.

As you would expect, beverage makers and bottling companies reportedly lobbied heavily in the House to defeat the amendment - which was defeated.

There is plenty of evidence from government studies, university research, and medical that dietary patterns among SNAP participants may contribute to chronic health problems and rising government healthcare costs. Stanford University found restricting SNAP purchases of sugary-sweetened beverages could significantly reduce obesity and Type 2 diabetes rates.

The highest obesity and diabetes rates are in the Southeast USA. Mississippi is second from the highest in the nation - yet all Mississippi Democrats and two Republicans voted to require taxpayers to continue to fund soda and other sugar-sweetened beverages. The two Republicans are Ezell from my district and Coats from the Jackson district.

This is a perfect example of how big businesses, their lawyers, and lobbyists pressure (maybe, maybe not) politicians to vote in their favor and NOT what's best for citizens. Yep - I'm disgusted with it. How about you?
