Farm Bill HOTT Item - Act Now - Beth receives an email from "Meryl Nass from Meryl's CHAOS letter (Critical Health Analysis and OpinionS). Meryl is one sharp lady and knows her stuff. The past week she has been informing folks regarding the Trump Administration's Executive Order regarding Pesticide Protection and most recently provisions added to the current Farm Bill being debated.
The Ag Committee has posted its date and time for the Bill markup, and it starts this Monday at 1 pm. It is also expected to extend into Tuesday and maybe Wednesday, depending on how controversial the many items are. Meryl has made it very easy to let your voice be heard. Simply follow this link to find the Bill Number, Names & Phone Numbers of Ag Committee members and a sample script you can use to guide your call. It only takes a few minutes. Time is urgent as the bill markup starts Monday, February 23rd.
We need you to call the members before they get to the pesticide liability shield. We would like you to ask for 2 things: remove the liability shield (Sections 10205-10211) and
demand that there be a recorded vote for the pesticide liability shield, so the public knows how every member voted.
Congressional offices pay more attention to quantity of calls, rather than quality. Numbers matter-a lot! Please also consider asking your friends and relatives to make these calls too.
You will be able to WATCH the markup here: https://agriculture.house.gov/calendar/eventsingle.aspx?EventID=8094
Friday, Meryl emailed
stating Rep. Pingree (Maine) just introduced an amendment to the Farm Bill (remember this is a 5-year bill) that would strip the sections granting pesticide immunity and preemption of states' rights. He is also teaming up with Rep. Thomas Massie (KY) on a bipartisan bill to reverse yesterday's Executive Order on glyphosate. More to come later on this.
Can you commit an hour to call as many of the Ag Committee members as possible?
WDAM TV Interview - MS Farm Sales Tax Bill Tuesday a young reporter called to ask if he could interview me regarding the proposed farm sales tax bill that would reduce sales tax on certain equipment purchases from 1.5% to 0.0%. I said sure, as long as my comments are not edited out! The appointment was made for after 4pm Thursday (we had to finish grinding/packing beef, etc.)
You can watch the EDITED video here. These are the topics that were edited out - 1) only 2% food consumed in MS is grown or raised in MS 2) MS imports $8.5 billion in food annually. 3) over $100 million per county in possible lost farm income. Lastly, my comments regarding new Federal guidelines encouraging folks to eat whole foods vs processed....and MS severe chronic health crisis... MS is 2nd from the most critical in health.
Stephen, one of our good customers and close friend wrote: "I have lost patience with politicians, especially "conservative" ones in the Mississippi legislature. Recently a debate over a tax cut for farmers was featured on a news site linked here in this newsletter. Alas, it’s a lot of debate with little impact.
Do politicians actually think that cutting a 1.5% tax on a tractor will feed anyone healthy food? I sympathize with the farmer in the video who said saving 1% on a million dollar tractor is real money. No doubt! One percent of $1 million is $10,000. Yes, that is real money, but it misses the point entirely. Any farm that needs a million dollar tractor is not producing healthy food, but commodities like corn, soybeans, and cotton, little of which you can eat. It all has to be processed with the profits going elsewhere (soybeans), used for other industries (you can't eat cotton) or fed to cows (most corn) on gigantic and unsanitary "concentrated animal feeding operations" which are a disaster for animals, people, land, and waterways.
Even if we concede that making $1 million tractors 1% cheaper is a good thing, who benefits? I purchase most of my meat from the local regenerative farmer in Petal, MS, featured in that video, who has a couple of tractors, neither of which cost that much. I purchase my raw milk and eggs from a very small family farm that would not fit the description of "commercial farm." Their tractor is quite modest. In other words, the people who actually feed me and my family will not benefit from this.
Finally, this whole situation illustrates a point we should all remember every time we talk to a politician or vote. Our nation, our health, and our children's future are in crisis and our politicians are nibbling around the edges of the problem. They make tractors 1% cheaper while our state suffers from a severe lack of good, clean food, a chronic disease epidemic, and obesity the likes of which has never been seen in human history. They help a few large farms, while good land in smaller plots sits idle (or grows pine trees, which you also can't eat). This is not meaningful agriculture policy change. It's like the Congressman who gets a $1 million cut from some program, while voting to approve a $1 trillion deficit.
Where is that DOGE we were promised? The house is ablaze and the fire department has arrived with a squirt gun."
