What IS NOT In Our Meat! - Today it is a well-documented fact that chronic illnesses among our young and elderly alike are at critical levels. Folks my age typically will struggle with at least two chronic illnesses. Personally, I'm blessed to not take any medication or to have been diagnosed with any chronic illnesses. But, unlike many, I have never used tobacco, alcohol or illegal drugs. And for the past 10-12 years have "cleaned up" my lifestyle (food & drink) where 80% or more would be considered clean eating - a nutritional approach focusing on consuming whole, unprocessed, or minimally processed foods in their most natural state.
Clean Eating emphasizes nutrient-dense foods like fruits, vegetables, proteins, and whole grains - while avoiding seed oils (including items cooked in seed oils), artificial ingredients, excessive sodium, added sugars, and unhealthy fats (polyunsaturated fats to include seed oils).
Like many things, Clean Eating is not that simple! Take whole grains for example. Some of the most chemically toxic foods include oatmeal, whole wheat bread, and bagels. Why? Because farmers will spray the plant just before harvest with glyphosate to kill the plant. In doing this the seed head receives a full dose of this chemical which contaminates the whole grain which ends up in products made from these grains.
Side note: Thursday, Seventy-three US House Republicans voted (280-142) to strip the controversial glyphosate immunity protection from the farm bill (which passed 224-200). None of the 73 were from Mississippi!!!
Genetically Modified corn and soybeans are similar. Both are genetically modified to be sprayed with glyphosate and not die! Let that sink in a minute.... but will kill everything else that is sprayed. Corn and soy products show up as ingredients in the majority of items in your local grocery stores - under their processed names. Corn and soy are also the primary feedstuffs given to CAFO beef, pork, and poultry.
Not long ago one of the ladies that helps us in our plant told this story. She was sitting at her computer desk drinking a soda. Between sips she started looking at the ingredients label and out of curiosity used her computer to look up the ingredients. To her surprise FIVE of the ingredients were know to cause inflammation - a problem she deals with daily.
There is so much to consider when changing your diet to Clean Eating! And, we are learning all the time - it is not like turning on a light switch, but more like a journey.
To be successful you have to consider multi-levels. For example, take a pack of hamburger meat. It has been reported that commercially raised beef hamburger can have hundreds (even thousands) of different cow DNA included in a single pound of hamburger meat. Try understanding what each of those cows did or did not eat and/or the vaccines they were given by the thousands of cow/calf farmers, the background farmers (who take a weaned calf and feed it until sending to the feedlot), and then the feedlot (over 900 options here) is impossible.
Chicken and Pork are simpler than beef in that the Integrator (like Tyson) owns the chicken, provides the feed, and processes the same chickens in their plants. However, the feed is GMO to resist being killed when sprayed with glyphosate. Both receive multiple vaccines and chicken have been vaccinated to include mRNA since 2012 and pigs since 2016 based on prior information I had learned. During processing, there is no way to differentiate which chicken came from which grower, etc. nor what all chemical options are used to control pathogens in the plant when processing. Have you ever tried to visit one of these farms? Good Luck with that.
At Nature's Gourmet Farm our customers tells us they no longer trust what is called food from their local grocery store. They are concerned with what the animals were fed, vaccines given, and processing residue. They are looking for a trusted source for their meat.
Our farm is totally different than any CAFO operation described above. Additionally, our animals are all raised on pasture. Our pastures are not sprayed with chemicals to control weeds, etc. In fact, weeds add diversity that some of our animals will eat. Additionally. we regularly add diversity by no-tilling various seed mixes to enhance grazing and soil microbial life. Animals are moved once they have accomplished their job and while adapting to changing weather, seasons, etc.
Our cattle are forage-based only! Never any grains. Both poultry and pigs are supplemented with a NON-GMO corn and soy based feed. NON-GMO means the grains have not been sprayed with glyphosate chemical during the growing or harvest periods like GMO grains are.
Vaccines - poultry and piglets arrive to us without any vaccines given. We do not vaccinate them either. Our calves will receive one Blackleg vaccine and mama cows will receive a Lepto vaccine each year to prevent them from aborting their calf in the event they eat forage tainted with urine from a lepto-positive raccoon, opossum, fox, etc.
Processing - our chicken and pigs are all processed in our on-farm plant as well as beef sold by the cut. Most of the custom half/whole beef is processed by a small local facility where the daily work pretty much equals the beef they process for me. Thus, there is literally no risk for any DNA from animals not from our farm to be in your hamburger meat.
And, unlike commercial farms, customers are welcome to visit and see firsthand how we raise and process our animals. Our farm is very transparent and welcoming. That is why many customers trust NGF for the meat they feed their families. Peace of mind is worth the extra effort from their busy day.
As a small farm that also processes, we focus on the harmful things that should not be in our food like the chemicals, vaccines, and processing residues. During processing our team works hard to remove gristle and bone from hamburger trim. Our hamburger is ground twice. First with a plate designed to remove connective tissue, gristle, and bone. Second, to grind as we pack into bags. However, with our new vacuum stuffer - starting April 2026 - our second grind will also be done with the plate to catch any possible connective tissue, gristle, and bone. Thus, a double cleaning. Then, we will use the stuffer to pack. Buying this equipment (highlighted in last week's newsletter) represented a major investment by our small farm to ensure our customers receive not only a "CLEAN" product but also a premium product.
We are blessed to be a blessing to so many folks who let us know the difference Clean Eating - to include our meats - has made in their health journey.
