Is Grass-Fed Beef Healthier, More Nutritious?

Good Morning and hello from your farmer,

Beth and I have been actively farming and selling direct to consumer for about 12 years now.

It took us a few years to learn that it is very important to discern who you listen to as well as avoid. That is where I came up with my Four Rules: 1) They must own the land 2) They must own the animal 3) they must use their own capital 4) They must be successful.

For me to consider their advice they would have to be able to answer YES to all four rules. A "No" on any of the four kicked them out. This focused my attention only on farms (people) who are doing what we are doing successfully.

Through the Grass-Fed Exchange Board Membership I was able to develop a lot of great contacts. One of those is Dr. Allen Williams who lives (and farms) near Starkville, MS and is a partner in several companies to include Understanding Ag and Soil Health Academy. And, Allen rubs shoulders with a lot of influencial people involved in important research.

Recently, Allen shared new research (Dec 2021) performed by Dr. Stephan Van Vliet, Department of Nutrition, Dietetics and Food Sciences, Utah State University, The Study: Grass-Fed Beef Healthier, More Nutritious, found that grass-finishing, compared to conventional grain finishing, increases a wide variety of health promoting compounds in meat and improves animal health.

Many studies in the past have found that grass fed beef has higher amounts of omega-3 fatty acids,
which have important roles in heart and brain health. Additionally, research has shown that grass fed beef contains higher amounts of very-long chain fatty acids, which are associated with decreased risk of heart disease.

Dr. Vliet's report goes much deeper and does a good job of explaining the scientific terms. However, it all boils down to the natural diet, exercise, and sunshine that the grass-fed beef receives as compared to the conventionally raised beef that is NOT fed a natural diet and gets very little exercise (or fresh air) in the cramped CAFO pens.

We are all involved in agriculture every day. As Wendell Berry said, "Eating is an agricultural act".

Is food something you take for granted - after all, food is just food, right?

Or, do you deliberately seek farmers who care for the soil, plants and animals regeneratively where you can get the best nutrition for your family.

At Nature's Gourmet Farm it is our passion to raise our animals the way God intended - in their natural environment where they can express their characteristics (pig can be a pig for example). And then be able to offer our meats and eggs to nourish families who are committed to a healthy lifestyle.

Have you made the commitment for a healthier you?

If not, and you are looking for premium ALL NATURAL GOODNESS of beef, pork, chicken, and eggs raised on pasture as God intended - without growth hormones, drugs, chemicals, and antibiotics - and raised humanely then you have come to the right farm. Our delivery schedule and product availability is listed below along with order buttons that will take you to our website where you can browse over 90 product choices and place your order from the convenience of your home. It's that simple!

Exciting News From Our Farm

Before I share our exciting news let me update you on beef! You may remember that we communicated our intent to combine April & May custom half orders and process them late March. That way we could increase the amount of inventory we are able to sell through our website. This week our team spent three long days cutting and packing eight beef that was added to our store late Friday afternoon. That represents two beef extra than typical to satisfy the demand we have for our beef. Now, for the exciting news. For some time I have been wanting to add to as well as upgrade our beef herd.

Animal impact On OUR Pastures

The documentary Sacred Cow is known for the phrase "It's NOT the Cow, It's The How!" The meaning is simple. The cow is not responsible for any environmental effects on our land, water, or air. However, the way MAN insists on managing the cow IS RESPONSIBLE. The cow left to her nature and instinct would never confine themselves into a feedlot situration where they would be standing in their waste. Nor would the cow, when left to their nature and instinct, confine themselves to a single pasture on continuous graze. The cow's nature and instinct would be to eat, graze, and move - very similar to the buffalo

Government IS RESPONSIBLE For That

January 2024 LtGov Hoseman wrote an opinion piece that was published in newspapers across the state. The jist of his opinion was Mississippi's labor market is at a critical inflection point where only 53% of our population is working and the balance is not. While I fully agree Mississippi has a critical labor market issue - I also know GOVERNMENT IS RESPONSIBLE FOR THAT!!! Full disclosure - I tried three times to discuss this point with Hoseman, but he never returned my call. I will be sending him
