Lots of positive feedback from last week's newsletter regarding research on Simple Truth Organic chicken. Maria writes: Thank you so much for this email! I found it extremely informative and important. I appreciate you taking the time to provide us with this valuable information and resource for recognizing true organic products. We are very fortunate to have you and your farm in our area. Many Thanks

If you are interested in lamb then I have great news for you! Here’s the story.

About July 10th, I contacted my farmer friend, David in MO who I knew raised lots of pastured sheep on his regenerative farm. I first met David and his bride when they received a scholarship to attend the Grassfed Exchange Conference (I was on the board and a committee member responsible for selecting applicants to attend).

David said he had lamb that would be available for me to pick up this week. So, Beth and I put plans in place to drive 12 hours to his farm after chicken processing and pick up lambs.

Then, (a time word as Les Feldick would say) one of the men (Burt) who attended our Soil Health Academy in May, called me last Thursday asking questions about chicken processing and equipment, etc. During the conversation Burt mentioned he was driving to MO to pickup two Ram Lambs for his herd improvement.

That got my attention! I asked, would you mind possibly picking up 20 ram lambs for me in MO? After checking locations between his destination and David’s farm, Burt said YES.

He would pick them up that Friday morning and bring them all the way to my farm…. That is a BIG deal as it would save Beth and me at least 24 hours on the road.

Next was a call to David to make sure he could support this. David said that he would not be available Friday for loading, but his farmhand could handle that. And, the lamb just so happened to be next to the corral and he could easily sort out 20 for me that afternoon.

But, that is not all the story as the lamb were ready for harvesting. Could the USDA and Ethan support us on such a short notice?

Ring, Ring – Hey Jimmy, I have 20 lamb for harvest Monday. Can the USDA support me? Absolutely – we are full up with inspectors and that will be no problem. Great – we will start Monday at 7 a.m.

Ring, Ring – Hey Ethan, I have 20 lamb for harvest Monday. Can you be here to help harvest them? Well, let me think a minute. Actually, I don’t have any plans for Monday – so, yes I can be there. Great – we start at 7 a.m.

And the same went with Amy. Also, Beth did not need to deliver eggs to the stores like usual so she was available.

I told Burt when he arrived Friday evening that this was a “God Thing.” For all of this to fall into place in a matter of hours Thursday afternoon is a blessing from the Lord.

But there is more!

Burt had already told me that he was not charging me to bring the lamb to my farm. When he arrived I tried to get him to at least let me pay for his fuel. He said NO. That I had saved him more than $2,000 Thursday afternoon with my recommendation on equipment.

So, tell me that networking and farmer helping farmer does not work? Sorry, you won't convince me of that.

All that being said, we have 20 lamb carcasses aging in our carcass cooler that will be cut and packed Tuesday of next week and added to our website Wednesday about 6 p.m., just in time for orders delivering next Saturday. I’m sure our customers will enjoy.

Health vs. Economics is THE Battle

Health vs. Economics is THE Battle - or maybe health vs. priorities of the general public when you consider that in 2024 the Apple App Store generated $1.3 trillion in sales!!! Vicki, a repeat customer from the MS Gulf Coast, sent me a short 3 minute video from a Joe Rogan Podcast with RFK Jr. discussing pig farms in North Carolina and how the CAFO pig operations got started. NOTE that the big companies own the pigs – the farmers only own the debt and do the work (and take all the risk). Please watch the video here.

"Pasture Raised" Defined

The USDA has officially updated the definition of “pasture-raised” to require that animals spend the majority of their lives on rooted, vegetative pasture, distinguishing it from “free-range,” which only mandates outdoor access. This update became effective March 2025. Here at Nature’s Gourmet Farm that is how we raise our animals – whether it be cows, pigs, meat chickens, egg layers, or turkeys. Pasture raised is our management choice and reflects our stewardship ethos. Frankly, pasture raised is how God created them to be versus. in a Confined Animal Feeding Operation (CAFO). CAFOs represent man’s inhumane wisdom!!!

NGF Customer Speaks Out

NGF Customer Speaks Out - First, a little background. Stephen & his wife Mary Katherine have been customers of our farm for 5 years. They, along with their 3 boys, have visited our farm. We have shared many conversations about farming and how Mississippi is truly a "food desert" (on a grand scale when only 2% of the food grown in MS is actually raised in MS). I know their passion for eating healthy and supporting small farms. They know my passion to increase small farms that serve their communities nutritious food. One day at our Madison pickup Stephen and I were talking and he asked, "What can I do to help grow the number of small farms?"
