See How Our Soil IS Improving In addition to the 1,589 trees in our Nature Solar Farm I shared last week, I also have purchased 35 Chestnut trees that are about 2 years old. These came from a retired nursery owner in Louisville, MS that I had contacted back in September. The Saturday after Christmas I hooked to my cattle trailer and drove up and picked them up. While there he also shared about 50 Chestnut seedlings he had as well.
The seedlings have been transplanted into 5 gallon felt potting bags. The 35 Chestnut trees have been planted along internal fences to grow shade for cows and hens. While planting the trees I could not help but notice the many earthworms uncovered in each of the holes - upwards of a dozen or so per hole. Another clue to soil health is aggregates. Soil aggregates are natural clumps of sand, silt, and clay particles bound by organic matter and microbial glues, forming crucial soil structures that create pore spaces for water infiltration, aeration, and root growth. Soil aggregates enhance soil health, fertility, and resistance to erosion with their stability depending on healthy soil biology and minimal disturbance like tillage.
Our soil is alive with plant, animal, and microbial life.
Microbial glues - anytime you drive across a creek or river after a heavy rain and see the "dirty" white foam floating down the river that is soil microbial glues washed away from ground that is heavily tilled, has poor to no organic matter and most likely no living root in the soil. Those fields will be heavily eroded.
A third observation we made while planting the trees was how soft the soil was to dig. The lack of soil compaction is confirmed in the picture with the presence of soil aggregates, all the grass roots available at various depths, and again the earthworms. When soil is compacted from tillage you destroy aggregates and all of those soil structures that create pore spaces for water infiltration, aeration, and root growth.
Here is a picture of one of the chestnut trees after planting. Note the hardwood mulch around the base. Hardwood mulch promotes fungal biology in the soil that is responsible for converting minerals for plant use.
