What's Up With Our EGG Supply?

Trust me, folks have been contacting me about our tight (sold out) position on eggs.

Many customers let us know they really enjoy reading about our farm in the weekly Newsletter each Saturday. But, did you know the newsletter also contains a section titled "Product Availability Update"?

This is where I let you know relevant details about restock dates, product issues, and etc. Here is the latest news about our eggs:
Eggs - Our "girls" are working hard to catch up after the holiday sales and ask for your patience. Please check each Wednesday just before YOUR
delivery.

Here is a bit more details about egg availability (also known as supply chain interruptions). While holiday sales put a strain on supply, the cold weather - specifically the 3-4 nights in a row in the teen's) did a number on our water system. Even though we turned off the water at night and unhooked the lines to keep the pipes from freezing they did anyway and busted.

In many cases it also pushed the water nipplers out.

No worries, I set up a temporary watering system for the hens until the weather improved where I could repair the lines.

Then came a mystery! Sometime after the eggs were gathered in the afternoon the water was being turned off at the valve. Definitely NOT something the hens could do! And, all of the folks working for us stated they had not turned off the water.

Anyway, for 2 to 3 days the hens were out of water for the better part of 12-15 hours each day. This affected their nutrition (food) intake which caused about 200 or so hens to stop laying.

All the water lines have since been repaired - in fact, I have purchased new PEX pipe and will soon replace the PVC pipe currently used.

The good news is egg production is getting better. And, we are scheduled to receive new hens late March. Hopefully we will be fully stocked soon.

Until then, please check out our Product Availability Update section in each newsletter for current product status. And, for eggs, please only order eggs on the Wednesday evening prior to your scheduled delivery. That's the fairest way I know to try and take care of everyone possible. Thanks for your patience!

Next week I plan to update you on the status of our soil test and what steps we are taking to improve soil health on our farm.

Cows & Pigs

Brand New Services– About six weeks ago Dixie Electric Power installed a brand new electric line with poles down my road. They replaced the old copper lines with aluminum and the poles are much better quality and taller. I asked the district manager when was the old copper line installed and he said since electric service was available for us… so, maybe since the mid 1940’s? Then, this week our complete road was blacktopped!!! If you have visited our farm you know it was long overdue. For years it has been patched to the point where the patches had patches. Hahaha

Clean and Cold | Adorable Calves

New Calves On Our Farm– Sometime in April we call our vet and schedule a breeding soundness exam for our bulls. This is before we add our bulls to our cow herd May 1st each year. Our oldest bull, affectionately named “Ole Man” by the guys here, was born on our farm the Spring of 2016.

New Pullets | Calves | Job Opening

Pullets arrived March 1st– every 6 months we receive a fresh batch of pullets. This year we were not sure if our late February to early March batch would be available…even though we ordered them last September. However, mostly since we have done business with the same farmer since the Spring of 2017, he prioritized our order and delivered them March 1st. While the price was higher, I was braced for a much higher price. Our pullets are typically 17 weeks old when delivered. They will start laying at about 24 weeks. That means we should start seeing medium eggs by our May delivery dates. YEAH!
