Farm Bill HOTT Item - Update - WOW, there has been much conversation this week around RFK Jr. coming out in support of glyphosate (at least in the short term). Many who support RFK now question why? And, I get it. However, one thing I learned as a military commander was your boss has folks above him that has a bigger overall picture of the situation that guides decisions. Wars are won by winning battles.... it could be some time before we know and understand the details.
I did listen to a podcast clip that Joel Salatin does called "Beyond Labels" where they had a guest on named Lisa Stokke who co-founded Food Democracy Now. You can listen to her comments in this 11-minute podcast. Lisa made a lot of impactful facts and observations.
The best way to not be "stirred up" over these big business control issues is to not engage with big businesses. You will loose! They have the lobbyist, etc. that control politicians to get what they want.... power & greed. Farmers who play the big business game will always be broke - really more like a slave to the businesses they sell their commodities into. Their "welfare" subsidy money simply flows through their accounts and into the accounts of big businesses (including bankers & insurance) they do business with. Always with the hope that next year will be better - we will make a profit next year.
Lisa commented as a consumer: "So, that's why I really feel like we need more localized and regionalized food systems because then we engage more. We don't just get more nutritious food, we get there's so much benefit, right? We get the pleasure of the food. We get the pleasure of growing the food. We get the pleasure of connecting with the people that grow our food." Amen!
Chicken & Pork Product Updates: Pork First - last week I mentioned recently, Patrick Shivers, who I follow on YouTube, visited Carroll's Sausage in GA. During the conversation they mentioned making bacon from the front shoulder. So, Beth and I took some butts from the last pig processing and made some samples to let customers try. Chicken: we sent out this notice to customers Tuesday, February 24th. Due to weather extremes our current processing plans have been delayed until March 2/3 with restock expected on March 3rd at 6pm.
This will give the broilers a week longer to add weight as they are considered small.
Additionally, in the short term I have ordered 500 processed chickens from Fed From The Farm located in MO. David raises 100,000 annually on pasture with NON-GMO feed and has done amazing work. He read our newsletter where we sell out so fast and offered to processes up to 500 and use our label (with his plant details). This is a huge value in having farms that cooperate together that are also doing the same processes, etc. With serving our customers needs at the heart ❤ of what we do. Thanks David!
100 will be whole birds and 400 will be cutup's. I now have confirmation the chicken will ship to me Monday for Tuesday, March 3rd delivery. So, expect to have chicken from David's farm and our farm added Tuesday at 6pm. There should be plenty for everyone! 😀
Additionally, we have increased our batch size to 300 up from 240 twice per month. And, Friday I met with a contractor & equipment supplier regarding our plans to build a new brooder - the bottleneck to production. More to come soon as we continue to invest in our farm in order to serve the growing needs of our customers. We sure appreciate our faithful customers.
