Inspiration - as mentioned in last Saturday's newsletter, Beth & I travelled to attend the 10th Annual American Pastured Poultry Producers (APPPA) Conference held last Friday and Saturday in Orlando.

If you are not familiar with APPPA - it is a non-profit trade organization that encourages the production, processing, marketing and purchasing of poultry raised on pasture. APPPA sees pastured poultry as the model for environmentally, emotionally, and economically sensible poultry production that can feed local communities uniquely nutritious, delicious, and humanely-raised chicken, eggs, turkey, ducks, geese, and guineas.

This conference was attended by over 400 people, farmers mostly, from all over the world, gathered to attend the only pastured poultry conference in the world!

This was the best poultry conference ever!!! Ginger Shields (Pastured Life Farm, FL), Executive Director, and the Board did a fantastic job putting together topics that support beginners up to seasoned professionals alike with exceptional farmer talent to lead presentations.

Key topics for me included two presentations on brooders (where chicks spend the first 2 to 3 weeks prior to moving to pasture), Common Diseases Found In Broilers, Lessons Learned Raising Broilers on Pasture - I could have gave this presentation hahaha, and building an on-farm store.

What was most inspiring was the number of young folks (families) who attended, were engaged, and working hard to provide the best chicken for their communities.

One person I especially wanted to meet is named Andy Harris, a young regenerative farmer from Denmark. Here are a few comments from Andy that speak volumes to the value of APPPA: "What I witnessed in those two days of the conference was what I think of when I think of the true American spirit. It's not the politics or the foreign policy. It's optimism, abundance, faith, and creativity. Courage and bravery in facing the unknown. Being OK with standing out when everyone else wants to fit in..."

I had expected to visit with an Air Force family, that now lives in the Orlando area, I knew while stationed at Plattsburgh AFB, NY back in 1977-79. Chaplain Quates and his lovely wife Grace really helped this young man through some tough times back in the day. Unfortunately, our visit had to be "postponed" as they were not feeling very good (they are in their mid 90's now). While we don't always understand God's direction, looking back it was probably best as Beth & I had been around a lot of folks, including tourist, from all over. We sure would not want to expose them to any potential health problem.

We returned home Sunday mid-afternoon. Just in time to change cloths, trailer turkeys and crate broilers for processing come 7am Monday morning. Inventory was added Tuesday at 6pm and chicken sold out within a few hours. Wednesday, was beef & pork harvest day. Thursday we packed orders (will be close to a record day).

As they say, a farmer's work is never done! And, we are glad you chose us to be your farmer.
